Easter Sunday is April 12 this year—just a hop, skip, and a jump away! One of the best ways to celebrate with kids is to attend one of central Iowa’s treat-filled egg hunts. Most of which are FREE!!! Bonus, many offer additional spring fun, including seasonal crafts, face painting, and live entertainment.

Here’s our round up of Easter Egg Hunts in Des Moines:
FREE: Bring friends and family and hop on over to West Des Moines Christian Church. They will host their annual Easter Egg Hunt at 11:00 am. They will have two different age divisions, kids 0-5 and K through 5th grade. In addition they’ll have some eggstra-terrific games and treats.
FREE: Join Johnston River of Life for a Community Easter Egg Hunt at Beaver Creek Elementary. They will have 5,000 eggs, bounce house, carnival games and activities. There will also be a prize drawing! The Easter Egg Hunt is for ages 0-12. The event is from 3:30 to 5:30 pm and the Easter egg hunt is at 4:00 pm.
When the sun goes down, the fun begins! Hosted by Indianola Parks and Recreation in Pickard Park the hunt takes place from 8:15 to 9:45 pm. Participants need to dress for the weather, bring a sack or basket to collect eggs, and their own flashlight. After the hunt prizes will be awarded and then join us for s’mores around the campfire. $7.50 per child (nonresidents) or $6.00 each (residents). Registration required.
FREE: New Hope United Methodist Church is hosting a family Easter party. At 10:00 am kids ages 0-12 can join the hunt for over 1,000 Easter eggs! You can also enjoy Easter crafts, bounce house fun and take your own photo in their Easter photo booth… word is the Easter Bunny will be hopping around too. These activities and a FREE pancake breakfast take place from 9:00 to 10:00 am.
FREE: Debra Heights Wesleyan Church in Beaverdale will host their annual Community Easter Egg hunt at Woodlawn Park at 9:00 am. They welcome infants through fifth graders from the community to see how many eggs they can “hunt up”.
FREE: Be sure to bring a container for your candy and prizes to Beaverdale Park at 10:00 am. The eggs go FAST, so be sure to be there early! Hosted by the Beaverdale Neighborhood Association this annual community event is for kids ages three to 10 years of age.
FREE: The second annual Egg Hunt on the Hill will take place at 10:00 to 11:30 am. Join Governor Kim Reynolds and First Gentleman Kevin Reynolds for this free event on the historic grounds of Terrace Hill, complete with photos with the Governor, the First Gentleman, and the Easter Bunny, a story book reading, eggs on a stick from the Iowa Egg Council, and of course: the Easter egg hunt! Families wishing to attend must RSVP by e-mail to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Meet up at the Jester Park Nature Center and learn how to use GPS and go search the park nests of hidden eggs. Be sure to keep an eye out for the “golden egg” for a special prize! For kids ages 3-14 years old, register by Wednesday, April 1st.
Join Des Moines Parks and Recreation Environmental Education on April 5th in Ewing Park for some traditional egg hunt fun with a modern fun twist. At this event, each registered participant will use a hand-held GPS unit to find the location of prizes hidden in the park. Register for either a 1:00pm or 2:15 pm start time.
FREE: The Clive Fire Fighter’s Association is holding its annual Easter Egg Hunt in Linnan Park at 9:00 am. The Easter Egg Hunt is for children ages 1-10. There will be separate egg hunts for younger kids and older kids. There are special eggs that can be exchanged at the fire station for a prize.
Welcome Spring with a day of fun for the whole family! The 1875 town of Walnut Hill comes together to celebrate Easter with ongoing egg and toy hunts, starting at 9:00 am, horse-drawn wagon rides, egg rolling, pancake flipping, a visit from the Easter bunny, and more. Discounts are available for advanced ticket purchase.
FREE: Windsor Heights’ annual Easter egg hunt with 7,000 candy and prize-filled eggs is scheduled for 9:00 am in Colby Park. Ages 5 and under will hunt in the tennis courts, ages 6-9 will hunt in the ball fields, and ages 10-12 will hunt in front of the Community Center. You will also be able to have your photo taken with the Easter Bunny and Ember the Fire Dog. The event will take place rain or shine, so dress accordingly.
FREE: Join Meredith Drive Reformed Church for their Annual Easter Treasure Hunt at the Bridge in Johnston. Starting at 9:00 am, this isn’t your typical Easter egg hunt! They don’t focus on bunnies and baskets. At the Easter Treasure Hunt you and your child will participate in crafts and activities that make Jesus Christ the main character of Easter! Children will be grouped according to age, preschool-kindergarten and 1-4th graders.
FREE: Tedd’s Garden Center hosts their annual Easter egg Hunt at 9:00 am for kids aged 10 and under. The Easter Bunny hides over 7,000 eggs and stays for the hunt and pictures afterwards. This event typically starts promptly at 10:00 am, don’t be late if you want to make sure your child finds eggs!
While the animals at Blank Park Zoo are enjoying their egg-cellent enrichment throughout the day, peeps of all ages can meet and get their photo with the Easter Bunny, while exploring the entirety of the Zoo on a Zoo-Wide Egg Scavenger Hunt from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. Collect an egg at each stop, learn all about egg laying species along the way, and exchange your eggs at the exit for your prize.
FREE: Kick off the day with the Rotary’s Annual Pancake Breakfast from 7:30 to 9:30 am. Then join in some Easter fun at the Dallas Center Annual Easter Egg Hunt at 10:00 am in Heritage Park. There will be crafts and activities and kids will be able to visit the Easter Bunny and have a photo taken.
FREE: This annual Easter Egg Hunt hosted by the Pleasant Hill Fire Department and Parks & Recreation is for kids 12 and under. The hunt starts at 10:00 am at Doanes Park.
FREE: The Great Egg Hunt! hosted by Urbandale Parks and Recreation is for kids ages 10 and under at the Giovannetti Community Shelter. Kids can fill up their baskets with all the candy and eggs they see starting at 10:00 am.
FREE: Hop on over to fill your baskets full of candy at Waukee’s annual Easter Egg Hunt! Three age groups get to take off and grab their share of eggs including, 4 years and under, 5-7 and 8-10 years old. The Easter Bunny greets kids in Centennial Park at 10:00 a.m. Rain or shine.
Join Howell’s between 10:00 am and 5:00 pm for a fun filled egg hunt on the farm. Are you tired of egg hunts with the pushing and shoving and the mass chaos? No bucket or bags needed for the hunt. Howell’s will provide an egg carton to collect empty eggs to then be redeemed for prizes. Every child will go home with something! In addition, the Easter Bunny will be there to meet and greet everyone and pose for photos. After the egg hunt, their playground will be open and they will be offering pony rides and concessions.
FREE: Be ready to have some fun at Soteria Church’s Community Extravaganza in West Des Moines. The activities kick off at 10:00 am and include: a massive egg hunt (split into different age groups), carnival games, candy, prizes, face painting, and a giant Inflatable slide.
FREE: Join Creekside Church in Urbandale for their Annual Easter egg hunt. Hear the Easter Story and help your kids search for over 4,000 Eggs from 10:30 am to 12:00 pm.
FREE: The West Des Moines Fire Department will host their annual Easter Egg Hunt at 10:30 am at the DMACC West Campus located at 5959 Grand Ave, West Des Moines. Stop out for fire truck tours, face painting, candy, and photos with the Easter Bunny. Don’t be late!
FREE: Enjoy a morning with family and friends with a good old fashion Easter egg hunt. All are welcome to join Shepherd of the Valley in West Des Moines. The hunt starts promptly at 11:00 am, so make sure to arrive early and bring a basket.
FREE: Join Lutheran Church of Hope in West Des Moines for games, crafts, Easter egg hunts (age 6 and under), inflatables, snacks and photo opportunities, all one hour prior to each of their Saturday kid-friendly Easter services at 11:00 am, 1:00, 3:00, 5:00 and 7:00 pm.
FREE: Come on out to Oak Park Elementary School for Revive Church’s Annual Easter Egg Hunt. Activities begin at 10:15 am with games, face painting, and giveaways. The hunts will start at 10:50 am. From Toddler to 6th Grade; there will be something for everyone.
Make a splash at the Urbandale Pool at their Annual Egg Dive. Go early, this popular event starts at 1:30 pm. Children will be divided into age groups to dive for colored eggs in the pool. Each egg will be turned in for a prize. $6.00 per person entering the pool area; only $1.00 for those with an annual pass.
