Spring break is right around the corner.  You know, that week that the kids have no school, pre-school or daycare? Don’t worry if it slipped your mind, we’ve done all the research for you. Send them off for a day or full week of art, adventure or sports—giving both you and the wee ones a break from break.  Here’s 10 spring break camps and classes for kids in Des Moines. 

Ankeny Parks and Recreation

Kids in 5th – 7th grade can stay off the couch during spring break and keep in the game at Ankeny Park and Recreation’s Volleyball Scramble! Kids can grab their friends and teammates and join them for a spring break camp that will sharpen both their skills and competitive spirit. Each session will begin with 45 minutes of skills and drills, led by former Ankeny High School Coach Dave Whims, with the final 45 minutes re-served for a scramble format designed for competitive play and rotating team composition. Cost is $25. Register online.

Camp Fire

You can drop your camper off and let them experience a day of excitement and learning at 2016 Camp Fire Spring Day Camps. Under the supervision of their trained staff, campers make new friends and interact with old ones through engaging programming. Each day includes transportation from one of their drop sites (Ames, Urbandale, Des Moines, and Boone), a hot lunch, along with a morning and afternoon snack. Cost: $35 per day.

Climb Iowa

Send your kids on a rock climbing adventure! Climb Iowa’s unique camps will engage your child’s mind and body while keeping them active and teaching them new skills. Climb Iowa camps will introduce young adventurers to rock climbing, but we won’t stop there. Children will learn about trust, teamwork and problem solving while developing their rock climbing skills through interactive games and activities.Session 1 is March 14-15 and Session 2 is March 17-18 at 9:00 am to 4:30pm. Cost: $125 (Member)/ $140 (non-Member).

Courage League Sports

Courage Leage Sports is offering a 3-day Spring Break Camp that includes a variety of large movement activities for toddlers to teenagers with special needs. Classes will be offered during March 14th-17th, 2016. Times will vary depending on the camp and age group. Cost: Free for members/Non-Members $69. 

Des Moines Art Center

Blast into the Art Center for a week of art-filled fun. Discover new art techniques and explore the museum to learn about different artists. Drawing, painting, printmaking, and sculpture will all be covered in class. Classes are offered to kids ages four to 17.  They also offered Parent+Child and Family Classes.  Costs vary depending on the age and type of class you register for. 

Des Moines Playhouse

This year the kids will get a litte “Wonka” with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Students in grades 1 – 2 will build miniature chocolate factories, make commercials for their very own Willy Wonka candy inventions and dramatize the “sweetest” stories, like The Gingerbread Boy, Hansel and Gretel, and more!  Students in grades 3-8 will rehearse and present a 35 minute adaptation of the classic show, complete with all of your favorite songs! Enrollment guarantees a part in the play, although auditions will be held to determine role assignment during class time on Friday, Mar. 11. Cost is $140 Subscribers/$155 Non-Subscribers for Grades 1-2 and $240 Subscribers/$260 Non-subscribers for kids 3-8. 

Jester Park Equestrian Center

Bring your kids to Jester Park Equestrian Center for some horsey fun over the Spring Break holiday. Camps will include safety training, horsemanship skills, a riding lesson, a wagon ride, and a nature hike. They offer two camps tailored for kids ages 5 to 8 and ages 8 and up. Camps are by reservation and are $60/session.

Experience Spring Break without the hassles of traveling and weather! Sign your child up for a 1-day or 5-day camp full of hands-on, interactive activities, or sign the whole family up for a one-day experience on the 1900 Farm. Costs vary depending on the camp and number of days your child attends. 

Rescue Camp

The Animal Rescue League of Iowa offers day camps during Spring Break. Campers in 7th and 8th grade can spend a day engaged in animal fun! Day camps include animal interactions, a shelter tour, crafts and games. The workshop is on March 16th, 2016 and runs from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Cost: $50.

Waukee High School Soccer

The Camp includes technical training and features a weeklong mini-tournament featuring the Waukee Cup and prizes for Top Goal Scorer & Player of the Week. Spring Break camp is for K-2nd graders for three days at $29 or five days at $49.  3rd-8th graders also have a three day camp option at $59 or a five day camp option for $79.
