Public pools and aquatic centers around the Des Moines Metro have announced their plans for the remainder of the summer. While several have chosen not to open for public swimming this summer, there are a few that are open with policies in place for the safety of our community. If you do decide to venture out, here’s where you can stay safe and have some fun in the sun at a local pool or splash pad with friends and family this summer in Des Moines.

This is your guide to aquatic centers and spraygrounds in the Des Moines Metro for Summer 2020:

Altoona

Adventure Bay

Part of the Adventureland Amusement Park complex Adventure Bay Water Park attracts out-of-towners and locals alike.  It opened for the 2020 season on June 13th. This is where you’ll find Iowa’s largest wave pool and longest lazy river. Pools, slides, sun and fun, there is something for everyone!

Location: 3300 Adventureland Drive; Altoona, IA 50009
Hours: Adventure Bay opens at 10:00 am every day of the week.  Closing times varies.   
Admission: Adult (10 years+) daily admission is $48.00, children (4 to 9 years) are $43.00 

Altoona Aquatics Park

The Altoona Aquatics Park will open on July 3, 2020 for Altoona and SEP residents only. Due to the pandemic there will be many changes this summer. There will be a limited capacity and due to social distancing requirements, the slides will be closed.  Additionally, lounge chairs will not be available, however you are allowed to bring your own chair and the concession stand will be closed, but patrons will be allowed to bring coolers.

Location: 1200 Venbury Drive; Altoona, Iowa 50009
Hours: Recreational swim will be held seven days a week, from 12:00 noon to 5:00 pm.
Admission: Altoona Resident Day Pass is $7; SEP Resident Day Pass is $10. Season passes also available.  

Ankeny

Cascade Falls Aquatic Center

The City of Ankeny will offer a limited aquatic center season at Cascade Falls Aquatic Center beginning June 29 with restrictions.  Admission will be open only to Ankeny residents, with the exception of families of students who are open enrolled in Ankeny public and private schools. Patrons must reserve a session online and payment is required. The tube slides, swirl bowl slide and basketball hoop in the lap pool will be closed.

Location: 2350 SW Prairie Trail Parkway; Ankeny, IA 50023
Hours: Daily (weather and staff permitting) 12:00 noon to 3:00 pm and 3:30 to 6:30 pm.
Admission: $4 per person entering the facility, per session and must be paid in advance through an online reservation.

Des Moines

Birdland Swimming Pool, Nahas Family Aquatic Center and Teachout Family Aquatic Center

On Monday, July 6, Birdland Swimming Pool, Nahas Family Aquatic Center and Teachout Family Aquatic Center will open. These three facilities will be open daily to the public for swim lessons, fitness classes and open swim. Capacity is limited to 200 people per facility, with a “one in, one out” policy. The tube slides at Teachout will be closed; however, the non-tube water slides at all other facilities will be open. No chairs will be provided. Patrons can bring their own chair for use under shade canopies and on grass/deck areas. Concessions will be open and provided in accordance with state regulations for restaurant services.

Nahas – 1101 Porter Avenue; Des Moines, IA 50315
Teachout – 2601 Hubbell Avenue; Des Moines
Hours: Open Swim Monday through Friday 1:00 to 4:30 pm and 7:00 to 8:30 pm; Saturday 1:00 to 6:30 pm and Sunday 1:00 to 5:30 pm.
Admission: Adults 21 and over $4 per person; Ages 3 – 20 $2 per person; 2 and under FREE; Half price admission after 7:00 pm Monday through Friday; Half price admission after 5 pm on Saturday. Pay at the gate, no preregistration will be taken.

Des Moines Spraygrounds

Hours: Sunday through Saturday 9:00 am to 8:00 pm
Admission: FREE
