When you’re thinking up fun things to do with your kids this summer, don’t forget that Des Moines has tons of live theatre performances that are kid and family friendly. The theatre and the arts in general, seem reserved for patrons who can sit in their seat and stay quiet. While that may be the case in some instances, it couldn’t be farther from the truth at the following performances and venues where kids are welcome, even the squirmy ones.
June 17th – 21st: The Addams Family at the Des Moines Playhouse. In this spookily funny musical based on the classic TV show, Wednesday Addams has grown up and fallen in love. Everything will change for the Addams Family on the fateful night they host a dinner for Wednesday’s “normal” boyfriend and his parents. Recommended for ages 13 and up due to mild sexual references. Tickets are $23.00 to $42.00 and can be purchased at the ticket office, on the website or by calling 515-277-626.
June 23rd: Send-Off Cabaret: IA High School Musical Theater Awards featuring Lincoln Ginsberg and Jessica Martens, Triple Threat Award recipients at the 2015 Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards, as they head to NYC for the National High School Musical Theater Awards. Lincoln and Jessica will perform selections they have prepared for the National High School Musical Theater Awards. This event is FREE and open to the public at the Temple Theater.
June 26th-28th: Stop Kiss by Diana Son a student directed play by Des Moines Young Artist’s Theatre. When Callie and Sarah meet, they unexpectedly fall in love. Their first kiss provokes a violent attack that transforms their lives in a way neither could ever anticipate. This production contains mature themes and language. Tickets are $10.00 and can be purchased at the door of Des Moines Onstage.
July 14th -19th: Rodgers + Hammerstein’s Cinderella at the Civic Center. This lush production features an incredible orchestra, jaw-dropping transformations and all the moments you love—the pumpkin, the glass slipper, the masked ball and more—plus some surprising new twists! Be transported back to your childhood as you rediscover some of Rodgers + Hammerstein’s most beloved songs, including “In My Own Little Corner,” “Impossible/It’s Possible” and “Ten Minutes Ago,” in this hilarious and romantic Broadway experience for anyone who’s ever had a wish, a dream… or a really great pair of shoes. Please note: only children age 5 and over with tickets will be allowed into the theater for this production.
July 20th: Summer Showcase at the Des Moines Playhouse. The Final Act Ensemble is a troupe of performers ages 60 and older that perform classic and original radio plays, including commercials and sound effects. Programs are available for youth, adult, and multi-generational audiences and shows are approximately 50 minutes in length. The show starts at 7:00 pm and tickets are $6.00.
July 24th-August 2nd: Des Moines Young Artist’s Theatre Presents: RENT at the Kum & Go Theater in the Des Moines Social Club. This Tony and Pulitizer winning musical takes the Kum & Go Theater by storm in an explosive new production by DM Young Artists’ Theatre featuring a cast comprised entirely of high school and college students. Tickets are $18 Adults, $15 Students/Seniors and $10 Children; and can be purchased at http://www.midwestix.com/.
July 31st – August 16th: Drinking Habits presented by Ankeny Community Theatre. Two nuns at the Sisters of Perpetual Sewing have been secretly making wine to keep the convent’s doors open. Reporters Paul and Sally are hot on their trail as they go undercover as a nun and priest to break the story. Add a new nun to the mix and paranoia abounds throughout the convent. Accusations, mistaken identities, and romances run wild in this traditional, laugh-out-loud farce. Show times are Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 PM, and Sunday matinees at 2 PM. Ticket Prices: Adult $15, Senior (60+) $12, Child (grades K-12) $10.
August 6th-9th: The Comedy of Errors presented by Class Act Productions. ‘Tis the story of two sets of identical twins accidentally separated at birth. Antipholus of Syracuse and his servant, Dromio of Syracuse, arrive in Ephesus, which turns out to be the home of their twin brothers, Antipholus of Ephesus and his servant, Dromio of Ephesus. When the Syracusans encounter the friends and families of their twins, a series of wild mishaps based on mistaken identities lead to misadventures the likes of which only Shakespeare could have imagined! This production is performed outdoors at Haines Park in Altoona, IA. In the event of inclement weather, performances will be moved to CAP Theatre.Tickets are $5.00, available online and at the park. August 6th-9th: Shrek the Musical presented by Carousel Theatre of Indianola. A musical with music by Jeanine Tesori and book and lyrics by David Lindsay-Abaire. It is based on the 2001 DreamWorks film Shrek and William Steig’s 1990 book Shrek! Tickets are $12.00 for adults and $6.00 for Students.
September 15th-20th: Dirty Dancing at the Civic Center. An unprecedented live experience, exploding with heart-pounding music, passionate romance and sensational dancing. Seen by millions across the globe, this worldwide smash hit features the hit songs “Hungry Eyes,” “Hey Baby,” “Do You Love Me?” and the heart-stopping “(I’ve Had) The Time Of My Life.” Ticket price TBD. Please note: only children age 5 and over with tickets will be allowed into the theater for this production.
