The best part of having a spring or summer birthday is that you can throw an outdoor birthday party!  But where to have it? From swimming to outdoor movies to paint ball, we’ve got the scoop on where to throw your spring or summer baby’s next birthday bash in Des Moines.

Celebrate your child’s special day in the same way you may have experienced it as a kid — at Adventureland. Think ice cream, cotton candy, a T-shirt and your birthday kid’s photo on the Tornado. Your child can choose between two party packages.  Birthday Basics package ($90.00 for up to six guests) or Birthday Gamer’s package ($125.00 for up to six guests).

Both packages reserves you: 60 minutes in a private birthday room in the Main Street Arcade, birthday cake, brownies, or Adventureland cookies, gift bag for the birthday boy/girl, personal host for your event and meal of your choice.  The Gamer package also includes a $10.00 arcade game card for the birthday boy/girl and $5.00 arcade game card for each additional guest. Note that the party packages do not include admission to Adventureland.

Blank Park Zoo

For young animal lovers, the Blank Park Zoo offers a 90-minute package for $160.00 that includes: admission for up to 12 kids plus two adults, facility rental of their outdoor pavilion, two educational animals, ice cream and unlimited train rides. Once the party is over you’re free to roam the Zoo to continue the fun. You can even add “upgrades” such as a face painter, souvenir bags and carousel rides. And, if you’re worried about the weather they also have indoor party rooms available.

FunFlicks Outdoor Movie

How about a birthday party complete with its own outdoor movie theater in the backyard or neighborhood park? FunFlicks Outdoor Movies of Iowa provides a giant inflatable movie screen, super-sonic outdoor sound system, digital projection, and an event crew to set up and tear down your event. Your rugrat can enjoy his favorite movie on the big screen surrounded by friends, popcorn and cake – just like going to a theater. Their birthday party packages start at $299.00 for up to 100 guests.  FunFlicks takes care of the party while guests sit back, relax and enjoy the show.

Iowa Cubs

Let your child party like a baseball star! Principal Park is the perfect place for children 13 and under to celebrate their special day with friends and family. The I-Cubs take care of everything for $20.00 per child, all you have to do is show up.

The Iowa Cubs birthday party package includes: one grandstand ticket for each child, Iowa Cubs baseball for the birthday child, meal for each child, wristband for inflatable concourse games and playground, Iowa Cubs baseball cap for each child, one photo of the birthday party for each child, balloons and a birthday sign at your table, invitations, Dairy Queen birthday cake or individual ice cream treat, a chance to participate in the on-field games, public address and photo announcements during the game.

Paint Ball Bash

This is an option for an older birthday boy or girl who prefers a dose of thrill with their cake and ice cream.  Kids need to be at least ten years old to participate and all players under age 18 must have a Parent or Guardian signed waiver. There are two outdoor paintball locations in the metro: Archery Field and Sports in Altoona and Des Moines Paint Ball Park in West Des Moines.

Prices to play paintball will vary depending on the number of people that will be playing and equipment rental. Check the websites or give the businesses a call for party details. One thing is for sure… partygoers will be talking about your party for weeks or even years to come.

Party in the Park

Take advantage of Central Iowa’s best weather and plethora of park locations, and have your child’s birthday party at one of the many fabulous parks in our area. Whether your kid is into sports, animals, or just playing in the sand, we have the perfect park for your birthday party.  Contact your local Parks and Recreation Department, County Conservation Office or the State Park system to reserve a shelter.  You don’t want to show up and find someone else partying in your favorite park spot.

Pool Party

Summer babies sure are lucky when it comes to the weather. For kids who love to splash, swim and slide, what better place to celebrate their special day than at a local pool? Most area pools and aquatic centers offer special birthday packages.

Most birthday packages books you a couple hours at a table or shelter, pool admission, food and more.  Prices start at $80.00 for ten kids and commonly include up to two adult chaperones.  Visit these websites for all the deets: Altoona Aquatics Park, Clive Aquatic Center, Des Moines Parks and Recreation Aquatics, Holiday Aquatic Center, Indianola Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center, Prairie Ridge Aquatic Center, and Valley View Aquatic Center.
