Black Panther Party in Iowa

Where: Waukee Public Library

Des Moines serves as a great example of the long struggle for racial justice that led to the growth of the Black Panther Party and the Black Power movement. Join the African American Museum of Iowa as we explore myths and facts around Black Power, how the Des Moines Black Panther Party worked with education reform and food access, and the ways they changed life for Black Iowans.  Registration is required to attend this event.

Black History Month with the Iowa Wolves

When: February 3, 2024 at 7:00 pm
Where: Wells Fargo Arena

Enjoy an evening of basketball and community celebration at Black History Night, featuring the Iowa Wolves facing off against the Sioux Falls Skyforce. Where: Forest Avenue Library

Drop by the Forest Avenue Library to look at photo books, graphic novels, and other visual records of Black history. These books are available to check out year-round! For now, they’re pulling them out with tables, chairs, and supplies to reflect.

I’ll Make Me a World in Iowa 2024

When: February 9-10, 2024
Where: Horizon Events Center

A celebration of African American arts, culture and contributions.  Actor, writer, producer and singer Christian Keyes is the headline speaker.  Activities include a wellness expo, vendors, soul food, history exhibits, performers, visual artists, kids carnival, door prizes, fitness competitions, cultural connections, selfie stations, community emcees and more.

Iowa Files: The Underground Railroad in Iowa

Where: West Des Moines Public Library

Join the West Des Moines Public Library and Historical Society in exploring captivating narratives that highlight the resilience and courage of those who sought freedom, alongside the crucial allies who supported their journey. Barry Jurgensen, Midwest Regional Manager of the National Park Services’ Network to Freedom, will narrate compelling stories of Freedom Seekers and the individuals who assisted them on their journey from Iowa to Canada. This enlightening event is a collaborative effort between the library and Historical Society, and it’s free and open to the public. Don’t miss this opportunity to delve into the rich history of these individuals and the impactful role played by their allies.
