Take a Trip Back in Time

Many families make a trip to Boone, just to ride on and visit the Boone & Scenic Valley Railroad & Museum.  The main line, which was originally laid in 1893, runs just north of Boone and makes a round trip to the old coal mining town of Fraser. Passengers will experience a bygone time of rail travel as you board 1920’s era coaches or the 1950’s dining cars. Additionally, the Railway hosts special excursions and events throughout the year such as a “A Day out With Thomas”, the Pumpkin Express and the Santa Express.  Before or after your train ride, be sure to check out the James H. Andrew Railroad Museum and History Center.

Enjoy Fall Fun on the Farm

Plan to spend a fall fun day on the farm at Rinehart’s Family Farm.  On their 800 acres they produce corn, soybeans, and fresh fruits and vegetables which are sold directly to consumers through their on-farm store and at local farmers’ markets.  During the fall months they offer kid-friendly activities like a corn maze, crafts, games and coming soon a drive-through corn maze.  They also serve up prepared foods like caramel and pecan rolls, pure raw honey, BBQ sauce and more.

Enjoy the Great Outdoors

Families can easily spend a few hours outside between two scenic attractions near Boone.  Thrill seekers will enjoy the activities offered at Seven Oaks Recreation Area.  During the warmer months, guests can go canoeing, kayaking, tubing and play paintball.  During the cooler months, Seven Oaks transitions to offering downhill skiing, snowboarding, and snow tubing.

The other outdoor spot to check out near Boone is Ledges State Park. Any time of year is a good time to visit, but fall is particularly colorful.  Take the family on a hike to check out the views of Pea’s Creek “canyon.” Or kick off your shoes and cool your toes with a stream walk.
