The mornings are cooler, the sun is setting lower in the sky and you’re starting to crave a pumpkin spice latte. In other words, fall will soon be upon us in central Iowa. Whether you’re looking for gorgeous foliage as a backdrop for family photos or simply want to get in the autumnal mood, we’ve rounded up places that will burst with fall colors in October.

When Can I See Iowa’s Fall Colors?

Banner Lakes at Summerset State Park

There are several fun ways to take in the leaves at Banner Lakes State Park, which is located just north of Indianola. Take the mountain bike along and check out the foliage from one of the fun trails that lead you through the woods, haul the canoe or kayak and take in the leaves from the water or get in your steps and hike around the lake on foot.

Bill Riley Trail

City Dwellers can take in the beauty of fall’s spectacular colors on the easy to trek Bill Riley Trail while hiking or biking. Making your way from Ashworth Park to Water Works Park or Gray’s Lake along this scenic trail is the perfect October activity to take in all of the splendor of the season. 

Gray’s Lake

Described as an “urban oasis” in the middle of downtown, the park features dozens of colorful trees and plants during the fall, along with butterflies, birds and insect life. Spend the day hiking, biking, canoeing, or kayaking, then relax with a fall picnic lunch by the lake. 

MacRae Park

MacRae Park includes 62 acres of woodlands, so you’re bound to get some great foliage viewing in during your visit.  Additionally, this Des Moines Park boasts one unique feature. MacRae is located on a bluff and has an overlook, which provides you with an amazing view of both the Des Moines and the Raccoon Rivers.

Elk Rock State Park

If you’re up for a short road trip, Elk Rock State Park near Knoxville, offers great views throughout the year and only becomes more picturesque during the fall. The park’s rolling hills and scenic overlooks make for some postcard perfect foliage viewing.  Fall leaves can be viewed hiking, biking, horseback riding, kayaking or canoeing.  If you’re up for a bit of a climb, take in the view from 106 feet up at the Cordova Observation Tower.
