Nothing beats a fantastic grilled cheese sandwich! The handheld meal of golden, crisp bread paired with gooey cheese is a crowd pleaser that both kids and adults want to gobble up. It even has its own day! In honor of National Grilled Cheese Day, which is April 12, 2018, we rounded up five places where you can enjoy the kid friendly classic in Des Moines. 5 Places to Enjoy Grilled Cheese in Des Moines
The Cheese Bar
2925 Ingersoll Avenue • Des Moines, IA 50312 • (515) 277-7828
You can’t create a list of where to eat grilled cheese in Des Moines, without including The Cheese Bar and its predecessor The Cheese Shop on it. This artisan market and deli turned full blown restaurant located on Ingersoll does a little bit of everything: they cater, they have a market (on 42nd Street) and they serve up the best grilled cheese sandwiches in town. You can dine on a Gruyere 1655 sandwich while your kids enjoy the Classic.
Cooper’s on 5th
227 5th Street • West Des Moines, IA 50265 • (515) 255-9895
“Classy Comfort” food and drink is on the menu at this Historic Valley Junction restaurant. You can find both the Grown up Grilled Cheese—Smoked Gouda, Swiss & American cheese, bacon, herb whipped mayo on thick French toast bread and a Ham & Swiss Melt —Ham, Swiss cheese & herb whipped mayo on their lunch menu.
The Fletcher
1802 N Ankeny Boulevard Ste 100 • Ankeny, IA 50023 • (515) 963-9632
This Ankeny restaurant has a couple of grilled cheese creations on their menu worth stopping in for. Go for the Adult Grilled Cheese off the lunch menu —American, Swiss and Pepperjack Cheeses or opt for the most popular—Prime Rib Grilled Cheese, which features Smoked Gouda, Cheddar, caramelized onions and horseradish cream.
Say Cheese
This beloved Downton Farmers’ Market vendor is famous for its grilled cheese. But not just any kind of grilled cheese—here, they serve ’em up creamy, melty and toasty. Kids will love The Classic with its combo of American + Cheddar. Parents can get a little spicy with The Popper – Red Hot Jack + Cream Cheese + Cheddar + Jalapenos. After everyone’s bellies are full, you’ll be ready to walk off your meal at the Farmers’ Market!
Trellis Cafe
Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden • 909 Robert D. Ray Drive • Des Moines, IA 50309 • (515) 323-6290
Located inside the Des Moines Botanical Garden (you don’t have to pay admission to dine here BTW), Trellis Cafe’s Grilled Cheese is hands down my daughter’s favorite in Des Moines. She calls it “fancy” grilled cheese and sorry Ps, but it’s a Kids’ Menu staple.
